Floral industry members will get face time with top cabinet official Carlos Gutierrez, during SAF's 28th Annual Congressional Action Days, Feb. 25-26, 2008. SAF has secured the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, known as the "voice of business in the government," to speak at a special working session Monday, Feb.
Industry Tunes into 'Green' Standard Process

More than 90 participants received a better understanding of the ongoing process underway to create the first U.S. national standard for sustainable agriculture during a teleconference held Jan. 7.

Online, Brick and Mortar Holiday Sales Up

As SAF awaits holiday sales tallies from its recently e-mailed survey, here's a recap of how retail sales in general fared for Holiday 2007:

Online sales for the 57-day holiday season, from Nov. 1 to Dec. 27 were up 19 percent from the corresponding days last year, according to comScore, Inc. Total online sales were $27.96 billion in 2007 compared to $23.56 billion in 2006. The gain of 19 percent compared to an increase of 26 percent last year. For the entire holiday period through Dec. 31, online sales totaled $29.17 billion, also up 19 percent.

Consumers got some flower-friendly organizational advice to keep their homes guest-ready this post-holiday season, as SAF distributed a ready-to-print article, "Ready Your Home for Holiday Guests," to newspapers nationwide between October and December. This resulted in 98 newspaper placements, generating 4.5 million consumer impressions.

The California florist competing in the Emmy Award-winning reality TV competition, "The Amazing Race" on CBS, is hanging in there, in fourth place.

For high-quality flowers and service, skip the Internet and head to a local florist: That's one of the messages Bankrate.com sent out to readers in a recent holiday-themed story, "Thrifty Gifting." The story, which encouraged readers to be frugal, not cheap, advocated flowers as an appropriate, well-received holiday gift, but it also stressed that not all flowers, or florists, are the same.
